The Anglepoise lamp is the classic desk lamp, originally designed in the 1930's by George Carwardine. Not only that, it is also one of the most interesting models, as it remains in perfect balance throughout its range of motion, without the use of friction. This is possible due to the use of a special type of spring.
I ran into the Anglepoise lamps due to the research of one of my past supervisors, Just Herder, on the concept of static balancing. My MSc. research was also strongly related to static balancing, and in that context I also met the current generations of the Terry family who run the company. This background fueled my interest in the lamps.
